about the company

history
paperishness started in 2009 when i was too broke to buy wrapping paper for a birthday gift. i had a fashion magazine, made a template out of a file folder i snagged from work, and made my first envelope. it was crooked and weird, but i tried again. and again. and, when i gave the gift, the person didn't want to open it because she thought the wrapping was great. her face showed that she liked the envelope slightly more than the earrings on inside (also handmade by me). that's when i knew i had something.

i was making jewelry at the time in an attempt to both supplement my meager school counselor salary and fill a creative void in my life. it was much more successful at the latter than the former. after the light bulb moment, i made a few envelope sets and brought them to markets with my jewelry. they got way more buzz than the jewelry itself, so i put more time into it. in 2010, i launched paperishness as a separate entity and haven't looked back.

mission & philosophy
the tagline for paperishness is "recycled awesome" because i feel like recycling doesn't have to be lame. recycling doesn't mean just putting paper and plastic into a blue bin and calling it a day. i want to show that useful (and beautiful) items can be made from everyday paper products that would otherwise become waste.

i only use magazines and books that i have read or have been donated to me by friends and family, and i try to use as much paper as possible (which is how the gift tags and collages came into the picture). the relatively low cost for materials is also why the prices on most paperishness products are so low. i want everyone to be able to enjoy my products.
